　　Capital Medical University

　　Beijing Stomatological Hospital, Capital Medical University, was established in 1945. It is considered one of the best specialized hospitals at the national level (3-A, the top grade in national hospital classification system) because of its integration of medical treatment, teaching and research. It has two fully equipped divisions, one situated in the commercial center in Wangfujing and the other to the south of the Temple of Heaven, an ancient park in Beijing, which gives this division a beautiful setting.

　　We believe in “invigorating a hospital through science and education” and follow a working style of “strictness, accuracy, diligence and cautiousness”. With the accelerating rate of development in dental care, the hospital has recruited a large number of experts in medical treatment and research, so that the overall competence of the hospital has been enhanced. With higher clinical and research expertise, we can now offer better and more varied medical services.

　　The hospital occupies an area of 23,000 square meters. Its building area covers 28,659 square meters, and deal on average with 2,000 outpatients daily. There are altogether 16 clinical departments (Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Department of Orthodontics, Department of Prosthodontics, Department of Endodontics, Department of Periodontics & Oral Medicine, Pediatric Dentistry, Department of VIP Dental Service, Department of Preventive Dentistry, Department of General Dentistry, Dental Emergency, Department of Geriatric Dentistry, etc.) and 6 technical departments (Pharmacy, Radiology, Department of Laboratory Test, Department of Oral Pathology, Denture Laboratory and Department of Medical Equipment). To build on the expertise of this hospital and give it full expression, we have also established several advanced clinical centers, such as the Oral and Maxillofacial Consultation Center, Center for cleft lip and palate, Center for Salivary Disease, Consultation Center of Orthodontics and Oral Implantation Center, to examine and treat more difficult and complicated oral cases.

　　The hospital has imported 391 sophisticated dental units and other medical facilities from Germany, Japan, Finland and other countries to meet various needs. There are also 80 beds in our wards for surgical cases.

　　There are altogether 656 employees in this hospital, of whom 541 are medical staff. 35 of these are either M.S. or Ph.D. supervisors, 126 chief or associate chief physicians, and 206 physicians of middle rank. 3 of our experts have been recognized as making an outstanding contribution; 8 enjoy government subsidies; 1 receives national funding for outstanding young scientists; 2 have been chosen in the cross-century talents project, and 6 in the Beijing medical talents project; 3 have been awarded the title of Beijing Outstanding Young Intellectual, and 17 the Beijing New Star in Science and Technology.

　　Using the motto “Great Virtue, Erudite Knowledge”, School of Stomatology, Capital Medical University has developed in two decades into a faculty with an outstanding teaching and research capability. It has established oral clinical medicine as a key discipline of study in Beijing and orthodontics as a key discipline of the public health system of Beijing. The School of Stomatology has also been identified as a national training site for oral medical personnel, a training site for clinical physicians for the Ministry of Education, and a qualified teaching site for clinical medicine. The school also has the right to grant master’s degrees and doctorates which mean that its medical teaching covers the whole range of oral medicine education. It is also a member of the national textbook compilation committee for Orthodontics, Preventive Dentistry, Oral Biology, Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Oral Medicine, etc. The School assumes the responsibility for training oral medical personnel from intermediate to doctoral level. In 2002, it was assessed as a national training site for life science and technology.

　　Beijing Institute of Dental Research has active introduced and trained high level researchers, and made great achievements in oral medicine. Its Laboratory for Gene Therapy and Molecular Biology, Laboratory of Oral Microbiology and Laboratory for Caries and Experimental Pathology are conducting many national research projects, including the 863 National Key Project, National Funding Project for Outstanding Young Scientists, National Natural Science Foundation of China(NSFC) etc. At the same time it also cooperates with National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the U.S.A and universities and research institutes in France, U.K, Japan, Finland and other countries. Since 1990, it has been given more than 50 awards of different kinds and levels (national, municipal and institutional). Its annual publications number more than 100, appearing in all kinds of academic periodicals and magazines.

　　The hospital ranks high in orthodontics, prosthodontics and oral medicine, etc. With the development of the hospital, its investment in research is increasing every year. As a result, research conditions have been improved. Since 2000 alone, the hospital has conducted 62 national research projects for the Ministry of Public Health, Beijing municipality, Beijing Public Health Bureau and Capital Medical University.

　　Beijing Stomatological Association, Beijing Committee for Oral Health and Beijing Dental Professlmel Association are all affiliated to Beijing Stomatological Hospital. They, as a whole, have contributed to the development of oral medicine and dental disease prevention in Beijing.
